Good news for those interested in acquiring Portuguese nationality: the amendments to the Portuguese Nationality Law have officially entered into force

On November 11, 2020, the Ninth Amendment to Law No. 37/81 of October 3 (Portuguese Nationality Law), established by Organic Law No. 2/2020 of November 10, officially entered into force.

One of the new news is that this modification will allow those who do not understand Portuguese, do not have effective ties with the Portuguese community, and are married to a Portuguese citizen or have lived in a de facto marriage for at least six years to apply for Portuguese citizenship.

This modification opens the door to Portuguese citizenship for those who have maintained a couple or de facto relationship with a Portuguese national for at least 6 years, exempts the couple from the requirement to have children in common, and exempts them from taking any Portuguese language proficiency exams.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind readers that in cases where a couple has children together, it only takes three years for the person concerned to obtain Portuguese citizenship.

In view of our extensive experience in cases of obtaining Portuguese citizenship, we recommend that interested parties, especially couples who intend to obtain Portuguese citizenship but have no children, take the necessary steps to start the relevant procedures as soon as possible and take advantage of the new information brought about by the implementation of this amendment. Advantages and favorable conditions to acquire Portuguese citizenship more easily, taking into account the current situation, namely that the novel coronavirus epidemic (COVID-19) significantly delays the time required for the above-mentioned procedures to obtain Portuguese citizenship.
